Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF when everyone is asked to turn off their light as a call to action on the climate change issue. An alternative celebration called Human Achievement Hour has been proposed by CEI.

Greenhouse gases - dangerous

Environmental Protection Agency issued a final ruling that greenhouse gases “endanger” health and human welfare. Declaring that Carbon Dioxide endangers human health allows President Barack Obama to gloat at the Climate summit in Copenhagen. He may brag of this executive power to impose emissions caps on industry in the United States. Under the "endangerment finding," the EPA asserts the power to regulate CO2 and other gases blamed for global warming.

The Obama administration dismissed concern over the climategate controversy surrounding leaked e-mails from the British climate research center. Yet to be answered is the possible economic impact of regulations that constrain emmissions.

Daily newspapers continue to struggle as circulation declines along with advertising revenue. Readers cancel print subscriptions in favor of "free news" online. Job cuts are affecting the newsroom with increased uncertainty for journalists: ( New York Times staff cuts)

Daniel Roth's article in Wired about Richard Rosenblatt's Demand Media describes crowd-sourced content creation producing thousands of articles a day. Each feature "custom created" based upon an algorithm that seeks to extract maximum ad dollars by "giving them what they want". "Online content is not worth very much. " Is this commodity pricing to maximize the monetization? Roth says, "Rosenblatt got rid of the editors", "...gut instinct and experience were less effective ... than a formula." The experts produce the content based on first hand knowledge –not freelance journalists interviewing others. Where's the editorial oversight?

Natural gas is gaining attention and is being promoted as a bridge fuel to a lower-carbon, sustainable energy future with reduced greenhouse gas (carbon) emissions. Natural Gas Supply Association reports that the environmental impact of natural gas is less than other fossil fuels. The Potential Gas Committee reports the United States has a total available future supply of 2,074 Tcf. Much of the recent upward (25%) reassessment comes from active and newly developing shale-gas formations.

Aruba Valero Refinery Closed

Valero anounced it would close the Aruba refinery indefinately. Bloomberg reports that the impact could be 13% of GDP. The Valero facility is ~800 acre on the southern part of the island near San Nicolas and previously employed more than 700 individuals. The refinery is near "Baby beach" and "Rodgers beach" ideal for swimming, and snorkeling.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, food manufacturers are warning of shortages if the Obama administration doesn't ease import restrictions. However, the American Sugar Alliance disputes the claims and accuse the food manufactures of "crying wolf" when their will be a surplus predicted by USDA. Sugar prices are inflated by demand in Brazil for ethanol fuel and poor harvest in India.

The US government CAR Allowance Rebate System (CARS) has proven
very popular with consumers. The government program offers a $3,500 or $4,500 rebate for the trade-in of eligible "clunker" vehicles based primarily upon fuel economy. The incentive is so pupular the first $1 Billion dollars alloted was spent in only one week. Congress is trying to designate another $2 Billion for the program. However, the senate is not likely to agree without debate.

The FBI Uniform Crime Report puts New Orleans, Louisiana, as the worst according to CQ Press City Crime Rankings (for 100K-500K population). NOLA continues to lead the nation in murders. But the Police chief disputes the FBI findings and the city publishes different numbers. The sad news is that both negate the efforts of the Louisiana tourism department.

Mexico's economy and specifically tourism has been hurt by the negative press coverage. Althought, the World Health Orginaization is not recommending travel restrictions for influenza A(H1N1) virus.

The pork industry is fearful of the impact of A H1N1 influenza or ( swine flu ) Misinformation spreads as fast as the virus. Egypt has ordered a mass slaughter of pigs. Some Canadian pigs have been infected. But, the CDC says you can't get swine flu from eating cooked pork.

Statement from the WHO says Swine flu (Influenza A/H1N1) responds to oseltamivir. However, there are concerns that the misuse of the antiviral could lead to resistant mutations in the virus.

Tamiflu has proved effective so far and many governments have stockpiled the drug. The US has started the distribution of Tamiflu to essential personnel in the health and homeland security hierarchy.

Louisiana has been having great weather for the sugarcane harvest of 2008. Early in the season estimates were pessimistic and predicted decreased yields because of the two hurricanes. The storms caused stalks to fall over (lodged) and some have broken, which result in lower tonnage produced. However yields have not been as bad as first feared.
